Letter from the Senior Scoutmasters
Welcome! Troop 182 is Wellesley's oldest Boy Scout troop, recognized annually by the Council as a "Quality Unit". Originally called Troop 2W, we've been serving boys from Wellesley and neighboring communities for more than 90 years. Since 1913, we've been sponsored by a group of citizens who believe that Scouting is an excellent foundation for life. We are overseen by a Troop Committee consisting of parents, Scoutmasters, and concerned citizens. The Committee meets monthly. Visitors are welcome; contact one of the Scoutmasters for committee meeting information.
We meet at the Wellesley Hills Congregational Church, 207 Washington Street, next to the Community Center. We meet most Sunday nights from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Enter through the west entrance. Please check our online calendar for the latest meeting and event information or call one of the Scoutmasters.
Fun, usually through outdoor adventure, is the troop's first objective. Unless the boys are having fun, they won't stay in Scouting. The troop provides structured activities, chocked full of fun, to achieve the goals of Scouting, which, simply put, is to prepare boys for the life ahead of them. Each boy is challenged to find something in Scouting that is special for him. During the school year, we have a “main event” monthly, usually a campout of one or two nights somewhere in New England. We end the season with a Mystery Adventure to a location unknown to the boys; of course the parents are informed. There are many other events during the year as well. For our younger boys, we make extensive use of our troop's cabin at the Nobscot Scout Reservation on Edgell Road on the Framingham-Sudbury line. Check the calendar for all of the exciting trips planned for the year.
We
have some 50 registered Scouts, of which approximately 30-40 actively
attend meetings and events. Troop
members range in age from 10˝ to 17. All boys ages 10-17 are welcome to
check out the Troop; please bring a parent along with you. If you have
received the Webelos Arrow of Light award or have completed the fifth
grade, you may join when you are 10˝. Most of the boys join the troop in
the winter (usually January) as they cross over from the Webelos program.
Boys may join at any time and need not have been a Cub Scout. The Troop
consists largely of boys living in Wellesley, but several are from Newton
and other communities. All are welcome, but we reserve the right to limit
the number of new members to ensure a quality program.
The Troop’s advancement program is working, we have boys at
all Scout ranks from Tenderfoot to Eagle. Each year 2 to 4 Scouts
achieve Scouting’s highest rank that of Eagle Scout. Currently the
Troop has a number of Eagle Scouts serving in youth leadership roles, and
many others actively working on their Eagle Scout Service Projects. All
of our boy leaders have completed one or more leadership training
programs.
Advancement through the ranks is an important part of Scouting program and we strive to help each scout to achieve his potential. Attendance at meetings is important to advancement, as is participation in main events. We also go, as a troop, to Boy Scout camp for one or more weeks each summer. About half our boys attend Scout summer camp. In recent years, we have attended Camp Yawgoog (Rockland, RI), Camp Resolute (Bolton, MA), Hidden Valley Scout Camp (Gilmanton Iron Works, NH) and, D-Bar-A Trail-to-Eagle Camp (Detroit, Michigan). This summer, the troop is attending Camp Yawgoog and D-Bar-A. A Scout does not have to participate in every meeting or event or attend camp to advance. We understand the demands of school and the many activities that most boys have. However, the level of involvement in the Troop's program and summer camp is directly related to what a Scout gets out of the program.
Parental involvement is an important part of the Scouting experience. You need not have been a Scout or even have outdoor experience. We can find a role for you. Please join us for a most rewarding experience. Get to know your son! For more information, contact one of the senior Scoutmasters below or send email to info@troop182.org.
Joe Levens, Assistant Scoutmaster
P.S. We now have over eight Assistant Scoutmasters, not to mention an active Troop Committee, without whom our program would not be possible. Please join us!
Joining is easy. If you meet the age requirements, all you need to do is fill out the following forms:
B.S.A. membership application (required before participation in any activity or event)- This is a two part form and must be signed by a parent. Please fold open the two-part form before completing the medical form on the back of the last page.
Troop 182 Permission and Emergency Medical Consent Form (required before participation in any activity or event)
A check for $50 made out to "Troop 182 B.S.A." This fee is reduced to $35 if you are transferring from another Cub Scout/Boy Scout troop after January 1 of the troop year and your previous Pack/Troop has paid your dues for the following calendar year. This fee will be waived if you are in need of financial assistance; please see one of the senior Scoutmasters. All troop members will receive Boy's Life magazine. An additional fee will be assessed for Junior Leaders (members of the Green Bar Council); details will be announced at the first meeting in September.
Scout Skills and Parent Resource Form - Though not required, this form allows us to best understand the Scout and family. Make sure that all necessary medical information is provided.
A uniform costs about $60. Most of the patches required are included in the annual fees above. Camping equipment can run to many hundreds of dollars but the troop has tents and other equipment for use by Scouts. Visit the troop for more information. Daytime activities usually cost from $2-$10. Overnight activities usually cost from $10-$20, depending upon event/admission fees and the menus planned. A two-night event usually costs less than double that amount. A really big trip, such as our mystery adventure, might cost $80-$120 for the weekend. Summer camp costs around $220 for 6+ days.
No boy should be discouraged from joining our Troop because of financial need. Financial assistance is available for all of the above expenses. Parents, please contact one of the senior Scoutmasters in confidence.
Paul Hurney has been Scoutmaster of the troop for over 20 years. He has completed Wood Badge Training, which is Scouting's top level of adult leader training. As a boy, he was a Scout in this troop. Formerly, he was the District Scout Executive for the Viking District. He is married and has a son who is in the troop. He lives in Newton and his home phone number is 617-633-1703. Click here to send him email.
Joe Levens has been associated with this troop since joining more than 30 years ago. He has served in many youth and adult roles from patrol leader to Troop Committee member. Joe is currently an Assistant Scoutmaster. He is an Eagle Scout, married, and has a son who will probably join the troop in 1 years. He lives in Dedham and can be reached at 781-326-2814. Click here to send him email.
The troop has 8 additional Assistant Scoutmasters as well as an active Troop Committee. Contact Scoutmaster for further information.
