The Order of the Arrow is a "Brotherhood of Scout Honor Campers", often referred to as the Brotherhood
of Cheerful Service. We are a group of people who have been elected by our peers as being capable of
upholding the honor through our continued actions of cheerful service to others. It is a youth-run
organization, meaning that all important decisions are made by the youth [age 20 or less] with advice
from the adult advisors. More information is available in the Order of the Arrow history page.
To be a member of the Order of the Arrow, you must be a current member of the Boy Scouts of America [Troops, Venture
Crews, Explorer Posts, etc.]. You may be elected in as either a youth or an adult [adults are considered age 21+]. After
election, you have one year to attend an Ordeal Weekend, during which you will go through what we lovingly refer to as "The
Ordeal". After successfully completing the weekend, you are then a member of the Order of the Arrow.
Your son will receive a packet in the mail (usually by mid-April) describing what must be brought to the Ordeal Weekend
and when and where the weekend will be. An up-to-date health form must be sent in with the registration, or brought
with your scout to the weekend. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email your Lodge Advisor, Chris
Thorp, and he will be happy to talk with you about it.
A Lodge is the Council-equivalent in the Order of the Arrow. Every BSA Council has one OA Lodge associated with it.
Our lodge is Chippanyonk Lodge 59. The best way to keep up with lodge activities to to be active. The lodge website is
a good place to start.
A Conclave is a yearly meeting of the lodges in our Section of the United States. The NE-1A Section encompasses Maine,
Vermont, New Hampshire, and part of Northeastern Massachusetts. Any OA member may attend, but must pre-register
with his or her lodge. For more information, please refer to the Section web site here.
NOAC is the National Order of the Arrow Conference. It is a national gathering of every lodge which happens every two
years, usually during the summer. For more information, please see the National OA Web Site.
